After almost three months of learning about Sport In Society’s mission and projects and working with the Greater Boston YMCAs and their teen programs, we, the coops, are now taking on another role- tutoring on the Verizon Mobile Learning Lab! The Verizon Mobile Learning Lab is a remodeled school bus, created to be an ideal place to have interactive learning between the students, tutors and the Verizon 4G LTE tablets. Six schools in the urban Greater Boston area will be sending about 10 students each for an hour onto the bus, to work with us on either their SAT skills or their MCAS skills (the need was determined by the school). We will be using the online Studyisland.com program, which has hundreds of videos, math and verbal questions, and explanations of how to solve the problems. We will be using this website on the Verizon 4G LTE tablets, which makes learning a bit more fun.
I am very excited to be starting this new project, and Verizon is very dedicated to helping the Greater Boston community, and making sure the students succeed. This past week the other coops and I have introduced ourselves to the students and were partnered with one or two students per school that we will be working with for the rest of the year. All of the students are very different- some are very excited to be there, and are ready to learn, and some don’t know why they have to be there, or are not excited to be there at all. This attitude of the students creates a bit of a problem, but it also creates a goal that I now have, which is to, by the end of the program, have my students talking to me about the SAT/MCAS, and finding the work they are doing interesting and enjoyable. I hope they end the program knowing that it benefited them, and not thinking the program was a waste of their time.
I look forward to working with the other coops on the Mobile Learning Lab and impacting the students’ lives by helping them do better on the SAT and MCAS.
